Spa sandwiching
A friend and I went to Spa Avania at the Hyatt for a little relaxation and some poolside lunching, where the conversation was zippy, but the sandwich…was not. Read all about it.

Things to do: April 17-19
I’m out of town this weekend, but here are some things to do for those staying local:
SATURDAY
Great American Picnic at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival : I used to be a huge fan of the Culinary Festival. It’s a great way to try a sampling of new restaurants about town. At $1 per ticket, and each item being 3-5 tickets, it kind of nickel-and-dimes you to death…but hey, the atmosphere can be nice (outdoors at Scottsdale Civic Center), and it’s a good way to try a bunch of foods at once. THEN, I read they are charging a $10 cover. I’m kind of glad I’m out of town.
Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza

Saturday, April 18, 12-10 p.m.
Sunday, April 19, 12-6 p.m.
$10 per person plus $1 per tasting coupon
Franz Ferdinand w/ Born Ruffians @ Marquee: I won tickets at Obscura last weekend, but alas, I’m out of town. Hopefully my friend will be able to enjoy their dance-y tunes…even if it IS at the Marquee.

The fruits of my labor
What’s Cracking Good — Growing veggies
I’ve recently started trying to grow some vegetables.
I went to a 4 part class put on by the Phoenix Permaculture Guild at the Farmer’s Market. The teacher, Heather Welch, was fascinating enough to make me get out of bed for the 10:30 a.m. classes (yeah, yeah, it’s a SATURDAY!).
The jist of the class is working with your current desert soil to create an easy-to-care-for garden that can last year round. SO, I went to 4 classes…and got started on my garden about a week ago.
And then nothing sprouted.
My neighbors also started a garden using a different method at around the same time.
“How’s it going?” they’d ask, peering over the wall at my barren 4×8 plot.
“Take a look at my stir fry garden,” she’d say, pointing to a bunch of sprouting green things.
Grrrrr.
I thought of all the things that could be wrong: My layers weren’t thick enough, too many seeds together, birds ate all my seed. But finally, after 6 days of watering and whispering sweet nothings…something is growing!
Take a look.

And a closer look.

I’m starting with some organic beans , melons
, summer squash
, pumpkins
and jalapenos
. We’ll see if I ever actually get to eat any.

The Permaculture class continues throughout the summer, the first installment of the next class starts April 8 (today!)

FRIDAY
Flea Market: The Willows and Olive Annie are hosting a flea market sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
SATURDAY
Calexico: Soulful music under the stars — that’s what Calexico at Heritage Square Pavilion will deliver. Even better, the promoters promise this 21+ show to wrap up before the last light rail line leaves for safe drinking and traveling.

SUNDAY
Founding Fathers of Modern Phoenix Home Tour: The self-guided tour shows off restored mid-century modern homes by Haver, Beadle, Straub and others throughout Phoenix. I dream that one of them is my future home. I’m not saying which one.
Mission for brunch: From 2 p.m. – sundown they serve all you can eat pork tacos for $16. The pork looks freshly roasted, carved in front of you. There are a multitude of toppings. The atmosphere is nice…and even better if you order a drink called the Primarita — Partida, lime juice, and agave syrup.
